A step-by-step guide to having your first AI conversation. Takes about 10 minutes. Completely free.
ChatGPT is a free AI assistant made by a company called OpenAI. In simple terms, it's a program you can have a conversation with — like texting a very knowledgeable friend. You type a question or request, and it types back a helpful answer.
Open your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge) and type chat.openai.com in the address bar at the top. Press Enter. That's it — you're there!
You'll need a free account to use ChatGPT. Don't worry — it's simple, and you only do this once.
You'll see this button on the main page. Click it with your mouse or tap it on a touchscreen.
Type the email address you use most often. If you have a Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook address, any of those work perfectly.
Choose a password that's at least 8 characters long. Write it down somewhere safe — like in a small notebook you keep at home. Don't share it with anyone.
OpenAI will send you a confirmation email. Open your email, find the message from OpenAI, and click the link inside it. This confirms you're a real person.
After confirming your email, you'll be taken to the ChatGPT chat window. You'll see a text box at the bottom. That's where you type your questions.
Click in the text box at the bottom of the page. Type one of these to get started:
After typing, press the Enter key on your keyboard (or click the arrow button next to the text box). ChatGPT will type its response within a few seconds.
If ChatGPT's answer seems too complicated, just type: "Can you explain that more simply?" It will rewrite the answer using easier words. You can ask it to simplify as many times as you need.
Your Social Security number • Passwords • Bank account numbers • Credit card numbers • Your full home address • Medical record numbers. ChatGPT is for questions and tasks — not for storing private information.
Type: "Please explain that in 3 simple sentences" or "Can you use simpler words?"
ChatGPT can occasionally make mistakes. For important things (medical, legal, financial), always double-check with a real professional. Type: "Are you sure about this?" to prompt it to reconsider.
Look for the pencil or "New Chat" button on the left side of the screen. Click it to start a fresh conversation.
Just type "please continue" and press Enter. It will pick up right where it left off.
